Design For Your Sign
Sagittarius ~ November 22-December 21
POOF! With the blink of an eye and throwing caution to the wind, let us take a moment to appreciate the fiery, independent Archers that warm all of our hearts and homes during these buoyant Winter holidays…Drum roll please! For I give you: Sagittarius. This mutable, Jupiter-ruled (planet of luck) sign is inspired, knowledge-seeking, and adventurous with a typical, jovial disposition and a can-do attitude towards the world. Sag is ready to take on life’s challenges acceptingly. If one were to engrave the expression by Ralph Waldo Emerson of “Life is a journey, not a destination” into a public vicinity, it would be signed by Sagittarius. While Sag is out in the world leaving no stone unturned, let’s learn how we make it our mission to design their homes to be constant and continuous sources of vision and nostalgia.
The Sag abode is often what we term in the Design world “A Collected Home”. Travel trinkets and souvenirs, whether it’s a rug from a Moroccan bazaar or a handwoven basket from southern Mexico, this sign is most satisfied when their memories are tastefully displayed throughout their spaces. And if you haven’t collected much yet, that’s ok! – global-inspired artwork and cultural books can do just the trick.
For a Sagittarius, the best part of coming home from traveling is being able to share and reminisce with their friends, family, and house guests about where they’ve been! Relishing and exchanging in fond memories is a favorite Sagittarian pastime. Displaying their travel trinkets and mementos helps Sag to stay invigorated (yet grounded) in their downtime at home…giving them aim in where they would like to venture off to next, while not forgetting their past experiences. Being such a passionate sign, a Sagittarius individual will collect items as they traverse the earth, hoping to bring home remnants that represent their life’s most memorable moments. When accentuating a space, whether its a living room, bedroom, or even spare room, these “found” items bring Sagittarius’ intellectual curiosities of exotic destinations, belief systems, and cultures to the forefront. Hence, Sagittarius takes on the persona of the everlasting student in their quest for freedom, progression, and the need for change. This can make this Sun/Moon/Ascendant sign a bit antsy at times! A creative and easy way to keep focused for this sign is to engage in mini home projects that have a quick turnover. Building shadowboxes is a great way to aggregate and organize some of these special discovered items in Sag’s home. There are many on the market and come in all styles and motifs. Having shadowboxes to store and display travel treasures creates snapshots of each unique travel experience and encourage endless, engaging conversations. Desire to take it one step further? Perhaps adding a written piece of paper to the shadowbox of what philosophy/mantra/ or “ah-ha” moment was discovered from that specific trip will give that memory an extra bit of intimacy.
We love a good vignette, but how about a travel-inspired one? In lieu of scattering mementos about, pick a designated area to FILL with your favorite memories. Hang a shadowbox, mount a world map…what ever excites you and inspires you to plan that next trip! We love BuzzFeed’s Melissa Harrison’s take on “20 Ways to Display Keepsakes from your Travels & Trips” (link below).
Why limit ourselves to just Interior Design?! Exteriors are just as important, and oh so much fun. We love the California life, and think all backyards should be equipped for pool parties, BBQ’s, and warm winters. Adding light fixtures and plush textiles aid in bringing the indoors out, as well as adding drapery for a more enclosed feel.
Sagittarius’ relationship with nature, and having the ability to satisfy the thought of entertainment in an outdoor fashion, allows their backyard to serve as a great portal for even a slight change of pace. “California rooms”, which mesh the feeling of indoor comfort with fresh outdoor air, bring both serenity and a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Sagittarians can be true social butterflies. The love of meeting new people and acquiring foreign friends (likely while traveling) gives Sagittarius the opportunity to entertain and host various festivities such as pool parties, barbecues, etc. in their home, extending those international invitations. Though not to bring down the hatchet, Sagittarius can be known for excessive yet expressive behavior. But wait, is that necessarily a bad thing? Noting how it is a sign of movement in both mental and physical respects, this character quality can lead others whom are lacking in social interactions or have shyness – its just knowing where the limitation is and where to draw the line for others and for themselves! A sign known for moving towards greater experiences in broadening the mind, they can inspire others to roam with them into various types of studies and branch into deeper ideas. The suggestion of having an outdoor screening area with a projector helps to gather groups to view and share travel photos, watch and discuss documentary films, stream an app outdoors versus the traditional indoor TV, or even watch sporting events. What this creates is an option Sagittarius loves!! Cozy yet minimal, rustic and natural textiles set the relaxed ambience Sagittarius needs to unwind and play.
Hashtag: Goals! This outdoor daybed has us dreamin’ of poolside pina coladas and this month’s Cosmo. Getting that 5-star resort feel in your own backyard is hardly a lifestyle we’d want to pass up, & Sag will swoon for this indoor luxury amidst the great outdoors. Add a lantern or two and this space will easily transform from summertime cabana to stargaze central.
Home gyms don’t necessarily mean weights, mats, and machines galore…A simple yoga nook, minimalistic kettle bell setup, or even collapsible treadmill has the ability to satiate that Sag appetite for activity. Of course, a state-of-the-art exercise room is ideal, but ultimately, any space where a Sagittarius can unwind and re-ground themselves will soothe their energetic souls!
Let’s Get Physical
Insofar, briefly touching on Sag’s struggles with excess can lead to some tricky situations… Sagittarius is overwhelmingly positive, so much so that this issue normally doesn’t manifest with them. But hey! – Perhaps alleviating some of that physical and mental tension can be released more effectively in a home gym? Why not? Sagittarius loves to test boundaries and push limits, especially when it comes to physical endurance. Having a space dedicated to personal fitness and activity is very much essential (if no other engagement is taking place outside the home). Pulling all of their latent abundant energy together and applying it inwards towards the body clears away the slumps of dismissive or cynical behavior that our Sag can find themselves attached & succumbed to from time to time. Whether it is weight-lifting, stretching, or cardio, what ever Sagittarius finds enthusiasm in and works for them can lead to unparalleled zealotry. Remember, moderation is always a good rule of thumb, but have fun! Retailers like Target makes it exceptionally easy to brainstorm ideas in creating the ideal DIY home gym, from free weights to yoga equipment. A small space to call your home gym, whether it is in a part of the garage, bedroom, spare room, or out on the patio…it does not have to be over the top or overpriced. It just needs to have the balance of what works for you and Sagittarius, over time, you will know what works and what doesn’t. I hope these design and lifestyle choices help create the change you want to see in your home and in the coming new year!
